Compromised Innocence

Last week I worked with the lovely and also very patient Fiona MacDonald on a concept portrait shoot in the studio. The theme ‘compromised innocence’ takes a clichéd fairytale image of the girl with white summer dress and flowers in her hair and has her rebel against the whole idea. She does not wish the observer to see her that way and is incensed by the whole conceit.

The lighting is low-key and uses a high degree of contrast to add to the dark discomfort and confrontation the model is conveying as is the, often tightly-cropped framing. Her expression and the way she holds herself is expressing her anger and contempt for the forced and, to her, dishonest styling that contradicts the subject’s own self-image and sense of personal empowerment.
