Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is held annually across the globe in support of prostate cancer charities. Keen as I am to spread awareness of a good cause, I am even more keen to photograph bikers dressing up as chaps and gentlemen for the day.

_MG_5330It was only by chance that I found out about the ride. I had dropped by the local Triumph bike shop to discuss some professional portrait shots and was told that I might want to pop down the next day as this great photo opportunity was scheduled. I am very glad I decided to check it out.

_MG_5403As I arrived and set my camera up the whole street was already buzzing with activity as the police and organisers discussed plans and the first riders parked their bikes and grabbed coffees.

_MG_5333I have to admit my excitement was stoked in part by having recently finished watching 6 seasons of motorcycle club drama Sons of Anarchy. The characters and carefully polished motorcycles did not disappoint.

_MG_5401As the participants gradually arrived, I made conversation and shot some portraits. For a random imposter, I am pleased to report I was made to feel most welcome – testament to either the accepting nature of your average motorcyclist or my honed ability to wander in and act like an official.

_MG_5392It was great to see so many people out raising money for such a good cause but it was clear that some also took the dress code as seriously as they too their beards.

Don Draper really needs a shave!

_MG_5368Although I was impressed to see such an abundance of pipes on show, I did have my concerns about the practicalities of refilling while in the fast lane.

_MG_5410The riders got on their bikes and prepared to depart for a police-escorted convoy journey from Sandyford to the quayside via the Angel of The North.

_MG_5437It was a fantastic event to photograph and a pleasure to meet some truly distinguished gentlemen doing their bit for prostate cancer. To find out more about the event, visit www.gentlemansride.com.
